LAN joined World Aviation in December 1996 and is represented throughout Australia and New Zealand.

LAN HISTORY

1930 Chilean air transportation took a giant step forward at the end of the 1920s when Chief of Army Air Services, Commander Arturo Merino Benitez, successfully sought authorisation from Chilean President Carlos Ibañez del Campo to create a national air transport company.

1946 LAN expanded its routes internationally with a service to Buenos Aires

1953 LAN increased international routes, including Lima, Peru and La Paz, Bolivia, as well as domestic service to Alto Palena, Futaleufu, Chile Chico and Cochrane

1967 On April 4, LAN introduced its commercial flight to Easter Island, marking the first air link between this isolated part of Chile and the mainland.

1968 LAN extended service to Tahiti in French Polynesia with its DC-6s. The company also opened new routes to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Asuncion, Paraguay; and Cali, Colombia, with the delivery of Boeing 727s

1974 On February 10, LAN linked Punta Arenas, Chile with Sydney, Australia with its Boeing 707, marking the first non-stop flight over the South Pole.

1994 In February, LAN expanded its South Pacific service through a commercial agreement with Air New Zealand, providing connections between Australia, New Zealand, South America and Europe.

1999 LAN joins the Oneworld Alliance Team

2002 LAN commenced combined direct services to Sydney, Australia with Qantas operating a new A340.

2003 LAN introduces interline E-Ticketing. LanChile introduces service to Bariloche, Argentina

2004
LAN CHILE, together with LAN PERU, LAN ECUADOR and LAN DOMINICANA will participate in the LAN alliance focused on providing passengers and cargo customers with world-class service and excellence in air transportation. The LAN alliance participating companies will offer the best travel alternative in Latin America to and from the region, offering a safe and efficient world class product on all routes independently served by each participating airline.
