SRILANKAN AIRLINES HISTORY
SriLankan Airlines began operations in 1979, initially under the
name Air Lanka, with two Boeing 707's flying to seven international
destinations. The new airline flew 250,000 passengers in its first
year.
The airline continued to grow during the 1980's, adding to its fleet
and expanding its route network. By January 1990 it had increased
its original network to a total of 26 destinations. In December
1992 the airline purchased its first Airbus, the A320, in what was
to become an all Airbus fleet. In 1998, SriLankan Airlines replaced
the name Air Lanka, and the peacock logo was redesigned to better
suit the airline's new identity as a modern, progressive carrier.
Today SriLankan boasts a route network spanning more than 30 cities
in 20 countries in Europe, the Middle East, the Indian sub-continent
and Asia, carrying over 1.5 million passengers a year. SriLankan's
progress in its 24-year history has been due to its philosophy of
consistently looking to the future and its drive for excellence,
on the ground and in the air.
