TAP AIR PORTUGAL HISTORY
TAP (Transportes Aéreos Portugueses) Air Portugal was established
in 1945 and began its commercial flights from Lisbon in 1946 with
Madrid as its first destination. In the same year the route designated
as the "Imperial Line" commenced, on December 31st, from
Lisbon to Luanda and Lourenzo Marques, which included 12 stops.
Domestic flights began in 1947 with the first flights to Oporto.
TAP's route structure grew quickly, with the introduction of services
to new destinations in Europe, Africa, and then South America and
the USA.
TAP joined the Star Alliance in 2005, on the same day on which the company also celebrated its 60th anniversary. Its Lisbon hub is a key European gateway at the crossroads of the African, North & South American continents, where TAP stands out as the leading carrier in operation to Brazil, currently with 67 frequencies a week.
TAP’s current network comprises 59 domestic and international destinations in 26 countries world-wide.
