TAP AIR PORTUGAL HISTORY
TAP (Transportes Aéreos Portugueses) Air Portugal was established
in 1945 and began its commercial flights from Lisbon in 1946 with
Madrid as its first destination. In the same year the route designated
as the "Imperial Line" commenced, on December 31st, from
Lisbon to Luanda and Lourenzo Marques, which included 12 stops.
Domestic flights began in 1947 with the first flights to Oporto.
TAP's route structure grew quickly, with the introduction of services
to new destinations in Europe, Africa, and then South America and
the USA.
In 2001, TAP Air Portugal carried over 5 million passengers and
over 70 thousand tons of goods and mail. Its present route network
covers some 58 destinations in Europe, Africa, North, Central and
South America.
